| Graphic Art and Design Colleges Inspire Creative Careers |
| by Dawn Papandrea |

With the graphic design field expected to grow 10 percent from 2006 to 2016, as advertisers, publishers, and computer design firms seek talented artists, making a name for yourself is all about having the skills. So how can you set yourself apart from the crowd, graduating from Graphic Art and Design colleges? See what one expert in the field has to say...
"Graphic designers who can create designs that contribute to business outcomes will always be in high demand because they are so rare in the world," says David Gammel, a Web strategy consultant for High Context Consulting, LLC, which helps organizations develop and implement effective Web and knowledge strategies. So how can you do that? Your best bet is by studying at one of the many graphic art and design colleges, says the BLS, citing that a bachelor's degree or master's degree in graphic art and design provide better career opportunities.
The same is true for those with computer graphic degrees looking to enter the IT field, he adds. "You will be highly valued if you can solve a specific challenge or contribute to hitting a goal for a client or colleague through your work." In other words, it's important to seek out graphic art and design programs or computer graphic degrees that incorporate other real-world learning, such as business skills and liberal arts that'll provide a well-rounded knowledge and indicate a passion for learning.
Gain Graphic Art and Design Experience
As Gammel says, "in my experience, the best people to hire at the beginning of their graphic art and design careers are those who are naturally curious about their work, and actively experiment and play with it on their own time." Any enthusiastic learner with the right base of skills via graphic art and design programs, he adds, can be developed and is often the best hire to make.
For teens considering graphic art and design colleges, Gammel advises pursuing your creative passions beyond the classroom. "Volunteer design work for a local charity or club, or offer IT support to a small business near campus," he says. "Build up some evidence of being an adaptable learner who helps others to achieve objectives and you'll have a strong start to your career when you graduate."
