Turn Your Guilty Gaming Pleasure into a Hot Game Design Career

Do you spend a good portion of your free time on gallant quests to save the universe; pummeling street-fighting opponents with dynamic moves; managing a hand-picked professional sports team to glory; and journeying through fast-paced colorful galaxies? If so, you're a gamer. And more and more video game-obsessed players like yourself, are turning their guilty living room pleasure into lucrative careers in

Game Design

 .

Like a high level of Tetris, the game design industry moves at a pretty quick pace -- and unless you've got the skills and experience, you may face a "game over" career scenario. To get in the game, and score big, there aren't any cheat code books that'll get you through. You'll need to master game design fair and square by enrolling in a reputable game design program and practice, practice, practice once you're there.

Control Your Game Design Passion
You don't have to be Super Mario or a legend like Zelda to make it in a game design career - you just need talent, education, and a love of video games. That's because once you make it to level two -- a.k.a. graduate from a video game design program - you'll be ready to play in an industry that's predicted to increase 69 percent through 2012, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Entertainment Software Association (ESA) stats concur, reporting that more than 239 million computer and video games were sold in 2003.

Level One: Game Design Schools
When researching video game design schools, to avoid certain "Doom," be sure the curriculum includes a combination of technical coursework, hands-on design projects, and some business savvy. At the International Academy of Design and Technology (IADT) Toronto, for example, the Diploma in Game Design program builds skills in C++(r), JavaT, 3ds maxT and AI (Artificial Intelligence) as well as game research, character and story development, game theory, and project management. In short, a good game design program should take students on a journey from game idea to completion.

And, video game design grads from IADT and other schools often find job opportunities in related fields like film, video, Web, and interactive design since skill sets are common. In short, game design is a real-deal career -- even if it is your teenage nephew's dream job (and admit it -- yours, too!).
