Two Steps to Success in Interior Design

Want to learn more about

Interior Design

? The best way to do that is talk to a professional in the interior design field, and then learn more about degree programs that'll get you started.

Step 1: We've got our designs on...

Interior Designer Troy Beasley, Design Principal of Beasley & Henley Interior Design (Winter Park, FL)

Q: Please overview your daily job responsibilities as an interior designer.
A: Every day is different, that's what makes it so exciting! It all revolves around the following: Project development, design, budgeting, team management, problem solving, consoling, consulting, material selections, architectural designing, product designing.... then I eat lunch (sometimes). Then there's meetings with clients, reps, staff, partners, new business development, and marketing.

Q: What skills are most needed for success as an interior designer?
A: Passion for design, energy, patience, and willingness to learn something new every day. The desire to make the visual environment and functional environment a better place. An honest and strong work ethic!! and oh yeah, I almost forgot, talent!

Q: How did your education prepare you for your interior design career?
A: When I earned my associate of science degree in interior design in1990, it gave me a basis to start with and a taste for what I could do if I put my mind to it and really wanted to be a success.

Q: Any tips on breaking into the industry?
A: Seek the best firm out there in your area of interest and court them so they hire you, live design day in and out, and plan on working very long and hard in your early years in the industry. Be willing to do whatever it takes to absorb knowledge. Organize your portfolio as if your life depends upon it and work hard to keep your grade point up, and your abilities sharp.

Step 2: Design your future at...

Interior Design schools, which will prepare you for a world of opportunity.

Once you're ready to get started on a career as an interior designer, you can look forward to median annual earnings above $40,670, since the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' last reports are from May 2004.
